Image detail

My original intention for starting this post was to allow the viewer to see that within every shot there are a multitude of smaller detail or vignette shots. I am big on detail and I always look for more images within the bigger picture so to speak. Walking away from the main shot you set out to capture is fine but your giving up a multitude of other images. Sometimes in the long run your detail image will turn out better then the original overall shot.

The front detail shot of this old truck actually was a better capture then the entire image. The rest of the truck fell off into heavy shadows, and had other items around it that were distracting and took away from the main shot.

I can also create other vignettes from the main shot just by changing the crop. So don’t limit yourself in going out and taking one shot and walking away. Study your subject matter and I bet you will find many more small detail shots to come home with.

These Detail shots came from John Piedt & Sons in Benton Harbor, Michigan. This local farm market sells everything from bird seed to actual size reproductions of Tyrannosaurus Rex. It’s just the head of Mr. T Rex but it’s strange to go by their store and see one sitting outside. There have even been life size castings of African Rhinos for sale. I drive by often because Brad Piedt the son of Darrell Piedt is always picking up something unusual to sell. He has a wide assortment of very old vehicles that make great photography subjects which is where these images were captured. There is a sad side to the owner Mr.Darrell Piedt that I should explain. Some 20 years ago I had driven by his store early in the morning and notice detectives, and police putting up the yellow caution ribbon around the perimeter of his building. Later that day I had found out that he was murdered by 2 young men or I should say boys who came into his shop to buy a gun. Mr. Piedt was a sensible and caring man and from what I understood would always try and talk someone out of buying a gun before he would actually sell it. Unfortunately these 2 individuals were there to rob him that day and shot him in the head and took several guns with them. They were eventually caught and the murder weapon recovered. The two were sentenced to life in prison without parole. If you want to buy a gun from the Piedt’s you will have to find another source because they no loner sell firearms.
